Fluminense 0-0 Borussia Dortmund: Kobel Heroics Deny Tricolor in Club World Cup Opener
Fluminense were left ruing a series of missed chances as they played out a goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund in their opening Group F clash at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in Miami. Despite dominating the match from start to finish, the Brazilian side were repeatedly frustrated by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who produced a string of stunning saves to secure a valuable point for the German club.
Making their return to the Club World Cup after finishing runners-up in 2023, Fluminense came out with purpose and intensity. Jhon Arias, full of energy on the right flank, led the early charge, forcing Kobel into a smart stop before testing him again with a low drive. In contrast, Dortmund looked sluggish, and their only real chance in the opening stages came when Karim Adeyemi whipped in a low ball that narrowly evaded Serhou Guirassy in the six-yard box.
The Tricolor continued to apply pressure, with Hércules and Matheus Martinelli both going close. Martinelli’s curled effort from the edge of the area skimmed just wide, and Arias was again denied by Kobel before halftime as Fluminense ended the half firmly on top but without the breakthrough their play deserved.
Dortmund showed little improvement after the interval, as their midfield struggled to retain possession and their forwards remained isolated. Fluminense, however, couldn’t convert their dominance into goals. Hércules blasted over from inside the box, and the best chance of the game fell to Everaldo, who broke free on the counter but unselfishly squared to Agustín Canobbio—his shot was smothered by Kobel in a crucial one-on-one.
Niko Kovač’s substitutions, including the introduction of Jobe Bellingham and Felix Nmecha, failed to change the rhythm of the game, and Fluminense kept pushing. In the 78th minute, they nearly snatched the winner when Nonato pounced on a rebound inside the box, but Kobel reacted brilliantly to block the close-range effort with his right leg.
The final whistle confirmed a frustrating result for Fluminense, who had controlled the tempo and created the better chances. Dortmund, though far from their best, escaped with a clean sheet thanks to the brilliance of their goalkeeper.
